Water birth is when a woman sits in a pool of water during her labor and subsequent delivery.

Why Do Some Women Choose Water Birth?

Water birth is said to mimic the environment of the womb for the baby. Advocates of a water birth report that the transition from the womb through a water birth is easier on the baby, as he or she is eased slowly from one wet, warm world into another.

Many women choose to have a water birth because it enables them to be surrounded by family and/or friends as they labor in the water pool. There are even some fathers who will join their partners in the water pool.

Isn’t Water Birth Dangerous for the Baby?

Since babies do not breathe immediately after birth, water birth can be safe when it is attended by an educated midwife or doctor. The baby is removed from the water immediately after birth and placed on the mother’s chest.

Who Has the Option of Choosing a Water Birth?

Almost any woman who is having a normal pregnancy can choose to have a water birth. Women who find themselves in the high risk category are generally discouraged from having a water birth.

Where Can I Have a Water Birth?

If you are interested in having a water birth, explore the options available to you in your community. Water births can be done in a birthing center, at home and even in some hospitals.

After you have researched water birth and made the decision that it is how you would like your baby to be born, talk with your doctor to see if he or she performs water births. Water births are becoming more popular and most doctors do not find the request of a water birth out of the ordinary. However, most water births are generally attended to by a midwife.

There are some women who do not want a water birth. However, they do choose to do much of their laboring in a water pool or Jacuzzi type tub. They report that the water’s sensations help to keep them relaxed. When a laboring mother is relaxed, the laboring process is usually quicker.
